Gossip Creature

Our creatures form a funny group called Woodlings. We live in Weirdlands peacefully. Oh peacefully with a pink monster. We just keep her happy and so our lives go on nicely. My creature is a real gossip girl. I am curious about everything. I spy and then I run telling others what I have just seen. I might exaggerate a bit...

Weirdos in a Forest

Our group of weird creatures spent 2 days in the lovely Queens Wood close to my house. On a first filming day Miriam was shy walking outside in her amazing spider like costume. I think that eventually she really got into it!

Nadias costume was built from weird shape cushions. Behind we can see Sayaka on her worm looking outfit made from sleeping bag.

Yono behind the camera.

Chloe was unregonisible in her shape changing costume with massive eye.

My scene with Yono.

And other scene with Miriam. 2 Scandinavians in simple Scandinavian design!

The Ipe Costume

May I proudly present The Ipe Costume! The actual costume is tailored from super maxi sized underpants. The ballerina feeling of it became slighlty accidentally. I wanted to make it look like a swimming costume as I can't think living without swimming. As a very young girl I had a common girl dream of becoming a real ballerina wich fighted against my strong tomboy personality. That very same unbalance have followed me all these years. That is my personality; someone who doesn't wan't to fit in the expectations. I need to brake the rules. I am against role types. I am happy to be pretty ballerina who climbes up the trees and gets dirty.

The trickiest bit of my costume was the making of these branches to go around my neck. I can tell now that it is not easy at all to turn around and stuff very long and narrow shapes. Branches together with my "helmet" represent my need for forest. Even though I grew up in Helsinki the biggest city of Finland the forest was always there. We lived on an island infront of the city and played in the woods and rocky beaches. Finnish people spend lots of time in the nature anyway. It is part of the culture. The forest is never too far. It is all around. Everybody has been picking berries and mushrooms. Everybody swims in the lakes and the sea. Everybody has been "forced" to go cross country skiing...and so on. In London I met for the first time people who had never been to country side or forest. I was baffled indeed.

development of ipe costume

Plans for my costume in time sequence:

To have something theatretical on my head is important. My costume needs to have bright colours and it needs to be fun. High heels are essential too. The 3 sketches under here are developing the final idea of forest animals on my head.

I started the building of my costume from the forest helmet as head is the main thing! The 2 creatures living on my helmet were moose and hare as they are the very basic forest animals in Finland. I made their constructions from wire and covered it with wet strips of newspaper.

The actual helmet was built on top of a balloon using tissue paper and water mixed with PVA glue.

The outfit is representing my need for swimming and it has the snow element too. Shape is like swimming costume but actually I was modifying extremely massive underpants. I decorated it with pink snow flakes. Around my neck I was wearing branches (made with LOTS of trouble)that had some tiny birds sitting on them. In my costume I am a forest creature from Wonderland.

amazing costumes, amazing designers!

I got extremely excited the second I heard that we need to design a costume! This was a perfect task for me. As I've mentioned already earlier I LOVE LOVE LOVE dressing up and I don't mean looking boringly pretty but real crazy dressing up. I have a weird fixation to swimming caps and helmets. Above are some of those by D&G and Giles Deacon.

In this blogging I have some of the pages from my sketchbook where I collected inspirational costumes from great designers. Underneeth are some pictures from simply amazing Fam Irvoll. Her cute knitted dresses are like made for Alice(the Wonderland lady)

And lets not forget cute boys...
